First Time on the Chain O' Lakes? The Complete Guest Guide
If you've never been to the Chain O' Lakes, you're probably picturing something smaller than what you'll find. This is not a pond. The Chain O' Lakes is a system of 15 connected lakes covering more than 6,600 acres of navigable water in northeastern Lake County, Illinois, about 50 miles from the Chicago Loop and 45 minutes from O'Hare. It is one of the great undiscovered weekend destinations in the Midwest, mostly because it's been a local secret for generations of Illinois and Wisconsin families who return every summer and don't particularly want to share it.
If you're staying in a Dockside-managed property for the first time, here is everything you need to know before you arrive.
The Lakes: What You're Actually Staying On
The 15 lakes in the system are all connected by the Fox River, which means you can boat from one lake to the next without ever leaving the water. The main recreational lakes are Petite Lake, Lake Catherine, Grass Lake, Fox Lake, Pistakee Lake, Lake Marie, and Channel Lake, each with its own character.
- Petite Lake is one of the more intimate lakes in the chain, with clear water and a quiet, residential feel. It's excellent for swimming and fishing, and it connects to the larger system via Lake Catherine.
- Lake Catherine connects directly to Petite Lake and is a central hub in the southern part of the chain. Properties like Grandview Estates sit on Lake Catherine's waterfront with direct access to the full chain.
- Grass Lake is one of the largest and most open lakes in the system, known for bird watching, kayaking, and bass fishing. The western shoreline is largely undeveloped, giving it a more remote, natural character.
- Fox Lake is the most connected village in the chain, with waterfront bars, restaurants, and boat rentals. It's a natural hub for groups who want to be in the middle of the action.
If you're staying at Petite Lake Resort or Cypress Resort and Marine, you're on Petite Lake with a short boat ride to the rest of the chain.
What to Do: Water, Land, and Food
Boating. This is what the Chain O' Lakes is built for. If your rental property has a boat launch or dock, you can launch your own boat directly from the property. If you're coming without a boat, pontoon and boat rentals are available in Fox Lake and Antioch. A full loop of the connected chain is a full-day boat trip, one of the best ways to spend a summer day in northeastern Illinois.
Fishing. The Chain O' Lakes is one of Illinois' top walleye and largemouth bass fisheries. Walleye season draws serious anglers from across the Midwest in spring, typically April through June. Bass fishing stays strong all summer. Pike, bluegill, and crappie round out the catch calendar. If your property has a private dock or launch, you can fish directly from the property at dawn before the rest of the lake wakes up.
Kayaking and paddleboarding. The quieter coves of Grass Lake and the Fox River connections between lakes are ideal for paddling. Early morning, before motorized boat traffic picks up, is the best time. Many Dockside properties have kayaks or paddleboards available for guest use.
Dining and waterfront bars. The Fox Lake restaurant row along the waterfront has been a Chain O' Lakes institution for decades. You can dock your boat and walk directly to multiple restaurants and bars along the water. Antioch's downtown, about a 10-minute drive from most rental properties, has a growing food and brewery scene that's worth an evening visit.
Hiking and biking. The Fox River State Trail follows the river corridor through the region and connects to the Illinois Beach State Park trail system. It's a strong option for a morning or afternoon away from the water. The Volo Bog State Natural Area, a few miles south of the chain, is a unique glacial bog ecosystem with boardwalk trails through rare wetland habitat.
Seasonal Events Worth Planning Around
Fox Lake Fishing Derby (February). One of the largest ice fishing events in Illinois, held on the frozen Fox Lake each February. Hundreds of anglers compete, and the surrounding bars and restaurants run special menus. A genuinely unusual winter weekend experience.
Pelican Palooza, Fox Lake (April). The American white pelican migrates through the Chain O' Lakes each spring, and the Fox Lake area celebrates the arrival with a community festival. Spring birding on Grass Lake during migration season is one of the region's overlooked highlights.
Venetian Night (last Saturday of August). The Chain O' Lakes version of the Chicago boat parade. Decorated and illuminated boats parade across the water at dusk, and the shoreline turns into one long viewing party. If your summer dates overlap with Venetian Night weekend, book your property early. It fills months in advance.
Fall foliage (mid-October). The Chain O' Lakes is surrounded by mature hardwood forest, and peak fall color typically runs from mid to late October. The contrast of golden and red foliage against the water is genuinely worth the trip. Shoulder season pricing makes October one of the best-value times to visit.
Practical First-Timer Notes
- Summer weekends book 60 to 90 days in advance. If you're planning a summer trip, don't wait until June to book a July or August property. The best waterfront rentals are gone by April for peak summer.
- Bring your fishing license. Illinois fishing licenses are available online through the IDNR website. Non-resident licenses are available for day, 3-day, or annual periods. If you're bringing out-of-state guests, handle this before you arrive.
- Boat launch access varies by property. Not all properties have a dedicated boat ramp. Check your property's listing details or contact Dockside directly before hauling your boat two hours from home.
- Water shoes. Most Chain O' Lakes beaches have areas with rocks and shells near the shoreline. Water shoes are worth packing.
- The drive from Chicago is about 50 miles. Allow extra time on Friday afternoon during summer. The I-94 corridor through Waukegan can slow down significantly during peak summer weekends.
